When disaster strikes, people are quick to grab canned food and bottled water, and these items are extremely important. However, there are many everyday essentials that flood victims need, and they often slip through the cracks. I wanted to list 5 items that are easy to forget that can make a huge impact for our upcoming donation drive tomorrow:

1. Socks and Underwear

Often clean, dry socks and fresh underwear feel like a luxury after a disaster. These items are hardly ever donated, but they are always needed.

2. Feminine Hygiene

Your donations help bring comfort and dignity to women in need who are often forgotten when the supplies are being compiled. Pads, tampons, and other feminine hygiene products are essential items, but they are rarely remembered.

3. Diapers and Wipes

Certainly, people with babies are hurting too. Baby items are always appreciated, and these essentials are needed more than most people realize.

4. Razors and Cream

Something as simple as a razor can help make you feel whole again when you are living out of a shelter or temporary housing. It’s a small luxury, but it can be a big deal.

5. Work Gloves and Cleaning Supplies

Flood cleanup is dangerous and dirty.  Protective gear and cleaning supplies like gloves, bleach, brooms and trash bags, are a game changer for people trying to rebuild.

Come see me tomorrow (Friday, July 11 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.) at the Walmart on Lowe's Boulevard in Killeen (Store #407). The NorthStar Portable Building is going to be filled up with new items for the Salvation Army of Kerr County, and we need your help.

If you can't stop by in person, you can still contribute online to the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund.

Let's fill this building and show Kerr County that Central Texas looks after its own.
