Mowing Your Grass Can Start a Fire? Safety First Central Texas!

Central Texas is in the midst of a drought. We all know that saving water is of the utmost importance. But with the heat bearing down, there's another possibility that some may not know of.

What exactly are we talking about?

Citizens of Texas have certainly been told to avoid burning their trash, or inadvertently throwing smoking items on the ground. These could cause a fire that would be tough to put out. However, there's another way a fire could start: by mowing your lawn.

Wait, mowing your lawn can start a fire?

KBTX spoke with Joe Boyd, Fire Chief of Brazos County District 2 Volunteer Fire Department, about the possibility of a fire starting simply by a Texan trying to cut their grass. Boyd went into detail about what he's seen recently:

“I believe I have personally been on three separate fires in the last week that were started by lawnmowers. So try not to take your lawnmower through a bunch of tall stuff right now. Obviously, we live and work out in the rural environment out here, so try not to take your lawnmower out through the pasture, the stuff seems to be binding up under them and causing fires that way.”

So to avoid possibly starting a blaze, cutting down tall grass is the safest thing residents of Texas can do. Just make sure you check your grass for debris and rocks first. If your mower blade hits a rock the right way and sparks, it could cause a brush fire that could rage out of control in these conditions.

Hopefully we'll get some decent rain soon and these conditions won't be quite so bad.

Otherwise, how will any of us be able to look outside of our homes and go, "Whew! Thank goodness I'm not in the heat!"
