LinkedIn Cofounder’s $10 Million Check Funds Nearly 80% of Pro-Talarico PAC’s Q2 Haul
Democrat Texas US Senate candidate James Talarico has slammed billionaires throughout his campaign, but one of Talarico's largest campaign donations was made by the billionaire co-founder of LinkedIn.
Mega-Donation Ignites Debate Over Big Money
Newly released Federal Election Commission data shows that billionaire venture capitalist and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman injected a staggering $10 million into Lone Star Rising, the primary super PAC backing Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico. While the political action committee accumulated roughly $13 million overall between April and June, Hoffman’s singular contribution represented nearly 80% of that second-quarter fundraising total.
A Shifting Financial Landscape
Since declaring his candidacy last September, Talarico has accumulated over $70 million, eclipsing the roughly $17 million pulled in by the incumbent Attorney General during that identical timeframe. According to KSAT, that total is due in part to one huge donation. Hoffman's recent $10 million expenditure is in addition to the estimated $77 million he has distributed to various far left committees and candidates since 2016.
Populist Messaging Sparks Political Contradictions
This massive influx of capital has drawn fierce criticism from those who argue that the multi-million dollar cash flow contradicts the candidate's anti- Capitalism platform. Talarico has built much of his campaign identity on a crusade to eliminate corporate PACs, ban independent expenditure committees, tax billionaires, and reverse the Citizens United ruling.
Texas Investigation Into LinkedIn
Attorney General Ken Paxton has opened an investigation into LinkedIn Corporation (“LinkedIn”) over allegations that the company has advertised and profited from fake or misleading job opportunities, commonly known as “ghost jobs,” on its platform.LinkedIn has hundreds of thousands of active users in Texas.
Epstein Connection
Hoffman's financial contributions to Talarioc andd other Democrat causes became further complicated after the release of information highlighting Hoffman’s historic interactions with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Files showed Hoffman maintained contact with the financier after his 2008 conviction and visited Epstein's private island in 2014.
