Here's a quick peek of what the new 3.55-acre neighborhood park in Belton is going to look like. Belton, TX - City Government Facebook posted a couple photos of what will be 'Jeff Hamilton Neighborhood Park', located just west of Avenue J and south of South Belton Middle School.

According to an article in the Temple Daily Telegram, the park is named after Jeff Hamilton, a slave who became Sam Houston's right-hand man. Hamilton eventually made Belton his home, first arriving with John Hill Luther - the first president of University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Hamilton raised his family in Belton and still relatives living in the Central Texas city. Hamilton passed away in 1941.

There are already two Texas historical markers in honor of Hamilton - his grave located in East Belton Cemetery and one at UMHB. There is also a Jeff Hamilton Park in Temple at 501 S. 14th St.

The city council announced that the park will include a playground, two benches, two picnic tables, a grill and a quarter-mile concrete trail.

The estimated open date for the Jeff Hamilton Neighborhood Park is tentatively January 1, 2017.
