Weather forecasters say we may see a break in the extreme heat in the coming week. If you are looking for something to outside in the cooler temperatures, there is a new state park you can explore.

New State Park Prepares for Day-Use Debut

Central Texans have a new destination to explore as Post Oak Ridge State Park near Lampasas prepares to officially open its gates for day visitors on September 24. Guests can now secure their day-use passes in advance, allowing them to explore the park's scenic grounds at their own pace upon arrival.

Visitor Access and Operating Schedule

The park will operate on a split schedule, welcoming visitors from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and extending hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Located west of Lampasas and diagonal to Colorado Bend State Park, the property is reached via the town of Naruna by driving four miles down County Road 105 to the entrance gate. Guests making reservations in advance will receive an entry code in their confirmation email. For those who just drive up, a QR code displayed at the main gate allows visitors to purchase any remaining day passes on-site.

Trail Details

The park features 3.5 miles of trails highlighted by scenic hills. According to Fox 44,  Park Superintendent Kacey Sloan says guests should plan a 5-mile round trip hike to reach the primary overlook, while a shorter, more rugged route offers a challenging three-mile walk. Beyond the 2.5-mile gravel drive from the entrance gate, visitors will find a central parking lot equipped with restrooms and an accessible picnic site under native post oaks.

Essential Visitor Tips and Safety Guidelines

Because work at Post Oak Ridge is ongoing, parkgoers are urged to exercise caution around marked construction zones. Facilities are primitive, meaning guests must bring their own drinking water, as no potable water is available on-site. Don't plan on scrolling through Instagram while you are there. There is limited cellular service throughout the property.

Escaping Urban Noise

The coolest thing about the park, in my opinion, is the serene, undisturbed setting. It is truly quiet...no manmade sounds anywhere.
