Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas is our state’s second-oldest public university, and it’s about to be the subject of a new CW series exploring the lives of the members of its celebrated marching band.
New CW Show to Follow Prairie View A&M’s Marching Storm
‘March’ will premiere on the CW on Monday, January 24, 2022 at 7PM Central. The docu-series will give the world a look at what it’s like for students and faculty who make up the school’s legendary band, The Marching Storm.
You’ll see the way drum majors, dancers, flag team members, and section players balance the pressures of academics and school life with upholding the proud traditions of one of the most prestigious historically Black colleges in the nation.
Shining a Spotlight on HBCUs
Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have always been institutions that instill a lot of pride in my culture. Being a woman of color whose family comes from Louisiana, I always wanted to attend an HBCU school. These universities were established to serve the education needs and aspirations of Black Americans, and band culture plays a centra lrole in HBCU culture and tradition.
Seeing all the heritage and history on display at these campuses can be like an out-of-body experience. Just to see so much excellence rooted in the achievements of people of color amazes me.
It's Really All About The Band
The PVAMU Panthers are not only recognized for the academics and nursing programs, but are also known to be true contenders when it comes to the battle of the bands.
If you know anything about HBCU schools, you know that some students are sold on going to particular schools just because of the bands.
I know that sounds dramatic and maybe even a little ridiculous if you’re not familiar with the culture, but you have to be there to see it. Hey, people choose schools based on the sports teams, so is it all that crazy?
Witnessing one of these HBCU band performances will give you a feeling I can’t even put into words. The.CW understood that feeling, and it’s great to see them diving into band culture with this new series. They have eight episodes lined up, so make sure you are on the lookout for this when it comes because it’s going to change a lot of people's outlook on HBCUs.
