Salado Ranch Hands Indicted for Cattle Rustling
Stealing livestock is a felony in the state of Texas. Douglas and Peggy Schafer have been handed an indictment for doing so by a grand jury, according to our news partners at KWTX.
The couple have both worked for the Monteith Ranch in Salado and are accused of selling more than 100 head of cattle without the ranch owner's permission.
The grand jury believed the Schafer's sold cattle for less than $150,000 dollars. According to an affidavit, the owner of the ranch notified rangers when the cattle turned up missing. Upon being questioned, the Schafers admitted to rangers that they had sold the cattle.
Records show over 100 head of cattle sold for more than $80,000 dollars. Monteith told the Killeen Daily Herald reports that Monteith says this is the first time anyone has stolen cattle from the Salado ranch.
