With all the controversial topics in the news these days, I have another one for you. Women are now prohibited from being pastors of Southern Baptist Churches.

Women’s Role in Church

Depending on the church you attend, rules exist regarding who can hold the title of Pastor. Growing up, I attended a Methodist church, and while my pastors at that time were male, today, the Pastor at the Methodist church near my home is a woman. I now attend non-denominational churches. Some allow women in the role of Pastor.

Southern Baptists Overwhelmingly Advance Constitutional Ban on Female Pastors

The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) voted to advance a formal constitutional amendment prohibiting women from serving as pastors. According to KWTX, the overwhelming 6,028 to 2,026 votes achieved a three-to-one supermajority, easily clearing the two-thirds threshold required to tighten existing rules within America’s largest Protestant denomination.

The Reason for the Vote

The proposed amendment seeks to eliminate any ambiguity within the denomination regarding secondary pastoral roles. While the SBC’s foundational statement of beliefs, the Baptist Faith and Message, already restricts the senior pastorate to men, the new constitutional language explicitly targets any congregation that chooses to "affirm, appoint, or endorse a woman serving in the office or function of a pastor/elder/overseer, specifically preaching to the assembled congregation."

The Theological Divide

Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a primary architect of the amendment, framed the decision as a critical line of demarcation between shifting cultural norms and biblical adherence. He argued that the progressive trajectory of more liberal mainstream denominations created the need for conservative evangelicals to draw a line in the sand, so to speak.

The Voting Process

Dissent during the brief floor debate was minimal and focused strictly on governance rather than theology. South Carolina pastor Doug Mize cast the lone dissenting argument, suggesting the addition was redundant. He pointed out that the SBC already possesses the constitutional authority to disfellowship non-compliant churches.

Different Strokes For Different Folks

The strict gender boundaries affirmed by the members contrast sharply with many other Protestant denominations that ordain women to top leadership positions, though they align structurally with traditional Catholic and Orthodox frameworks.

Central Texas Churches

There is no single, definitive registry that tracks the exact number of female pastors across the entire Central Texas region. Individual churches are independent, and different denominations have completely separate tracking systems.

Mainline Protestant Denominations (Highest Concentration)

If you see a female senior or associate pastor in Central Texas, she is most likely ordained in a "mainline" Protestant denomination. Nationally, Barna Group research shows that 58% of all female senior pastors belong to these groups. In Central Texas, they are primarily found in:

The United Methodist Church (UMC): The Central Texas Conference of the UMC has a long history of appointing women to local pulpits.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) & The Episcopal Church: Both of these denominations fully ordain women, and you will find female rectors and pastors leading congregations.

The Baptist Landscape (A Sharp Regional Divide)

Central Texas is a major hub for Baptist life, but female leadership depends entirely on which convention a local church aligns with:

Southern Baptist Convention (SBC): Following strict national constitutional votes to ban congregations with female pastors, there are virtually zero women serving in pastoral roles in local SBC-affiliated churches.

Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) & Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT): These more moderate Baptist groups do affirm women in ministry. In fact, Calvary Baptist Church in Waco made Texas history by becoming the first Baptist congregation in the state to call a female senior pastor (Julie Pennington-Russell).

Non-Denominational and Evangelical Churches

In the independent, non-denominational, and charismatic churches that make up a large portion of the Central Texas faith community, leadership structures vary wildly. While some local megachurches adhere strictly to a male-only eldership model, others feature husband-and-wife co-pastor teams where women regularly preach, lead ministries, and command equal executive authority.
