The Billionaires Club: The Texans Who Made the Top 50 on the Forbes 400 Richest List
Forbes is out with its annual ranking of the wealthiest people in the United States, and once again, I am not included.
Annual Forbes Ranking of the Ultra Rich
According to the latest Forbes 400 ranking of the country's richest individuals, the low bar to join the list has climbed to an unprecedented baseline of $4.4 billion. This steep requirement left nearly 600 American billionaires on the outside looking in, deeming them "too poor" to make the cut. Collectively, the 400 figures on this year's roster command a staggering $8 trillion in total assets.
Concentration of Wealth at the Very Top
The top 20 individuals alone account for half of the entire list's combined net worth, marking a $970 billion surge compared to the previous year. Despite the elevated financial threshold required to enter the rankings, the list still welcomed 34 high-net-worth newcomers into its ranks.
Historic Milestone for Top Spot
Dominating the rankings once again is Tesla and SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk, who secured the number-one position for the fifth consecutive year. Musk set a monumental financial precedent by becoming the first individual in the history of the publication tracking to cross the $900 billion threshold, standing at an estimated $908 billion. Musk sits more than $500 billion ahead of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who claimed the second spot with a valuation of $378 billion.
Texas Dominates Upper Echelons of Wealth
The Lone Star State maintains a powerful footprint near the top of the national rankings, anchored by several prominent figures making up the top tier of American wealth. Heading the state's representation is top-ranked Elon Musk, alongside tech titan Michael Dell of Dell Technologies, who secured the fourth overall position with $263 billion. Walmart heiress Alice Walton also represents Texas high on the board at 13th place with $118 billion, followed by Koch Inc. heiress Elaine Marshall and family in 34th with $32.2 billion. Rounding out the state's presence in the top 50 are energy sector figure Lyndal Stephens Greth ($30 billion), sports and real estate magnate Stanley Kroenke ($27.6 billion), and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and family, who hold the 49th spot with an estimated $23.5 billion.
