If you drive in Texas, you are probably accustomed to long commutes. It is the reason we describe driving times in hours instead of miles. Elon Musk wants to do something about that.

The Boring Company in Texas

Elon Musk says The Boring Company is working on a high-speed tunnel between Austin and San Antonio that could reduce travel between the two cities to less than 30 minutes. On X, Musk posted, "Boring Company is working on a simple, precursor Hyperloop tunnel between Austin and San Antonio (>200 mph). Due to traffic congestion, that journey can currently take up to 2.5 hours. @BoringCompany can reduce that to a consistent <30 mins.”

How the Hyperloop Works

The Hyperloop is an ultra-high-speed transit concept originally proposed by Elon Musk in a 2013 white paper published by Tesla and SpaceX.It was promoted as a "fifth mode of transportation" alongside cars, trains, planes, and boats. Musk said the system is designed to carry passengers or freight at speeds exceeding 600 to 760 mph .

The Underlying Mechanics

Pneumatic Low-Pressure Tubes: Enclosed steel tubes are maintained at a partial vacuum. By removing nearly all the air from inside the tube, aerodynamic drag, is reduced to near zero.

Levitation and Propulsion: Specially engineered autonomous passenger pods travel inside the tube.

Air Compressors: Prrovide extra thrust and lift.

How People Use Musk's Tunnel Systems

While the full sub-supersonic Hyperloop remains in development and testing phases, Elon Musk's, The Boring Company, has operational low-speed tunnel systems, known as the Loop, currently in public use.

The Vegas Loop

The most prominent operational application of Musk's tunneling technology is the Vegas Loop in Las Vegas.

The Fleet: Rather than high-speed vacuum pods, passengers currently board human-driven (and eventually autonomous) Tesla electric vehicles.

Station Access: Riders enter small street-level or subterranean stations located at major hotel resorts, convention centers, and parking lots.

Express Travel: Because the system uses point-to-point routing, vehicles bypass all intermediate stops. A passenger traveling from a hotel to a convention hall drives straight through dedicated underground tunnels, completely avoiding street-level traffic, traffic lights, and pedestrian intersections.

The Future Transition: "Precursor Hyperloop"

For longer intercity travel, The Boring Company is developing high-speed underground corridors intended to blend the operational style of the Loop with the high-speed principles of the Hyperloop. The company maintains an active Bastrop, Texas Hyperloop Test Site to test vacuum pumping systems, tunneling equipment, and high-speed pods.

Proposed Intercity Links

Concepts like the proposed regional link connecting Austin and San Antonio target speeds exceeding 200 mph. Under this model, passengers would enter a local station in one city, enter an underground express tube, and arrive at a destination 80 miles away in under 30 minutes without transfers or TSA-style central terminal delays.
