The police chief in Normangee, Texas (73 miles east of Temple) may face charges of deadly conduct and evading police in a motor vehicle after surrendering to Texas Rangers Wednesday morning.

KBTX-TV reports that the Madison County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from Normangee Police Chief Charles Herford's wife shortly before 2 AM. When the call was disconnected, the sheriff's office called back, and when Herford's crying wife answered, the operator thought she heard shots fired.

Sheriff's deputies were en route to Herford's home when they spotted his police cruiser driving through town and tried to stop him. Herford reportedly eluded them after a short chase, after which he communicated with police via radio while they searched for him.

According to KAGS-TV, Herford returned to his house around 5:30 AM, where he continued to have radio contact with sheriff's deputies, DPS troopers, and Texas Rangers, all of whom surrounded his house. Authorities say Herford's wife and children were not home when he returned.

Herfrod was holed up in his home until about 7 AM, when he surrendered.

KHOU.com reported that Herford was taken to the Leon County Sheriff's Office in Centerville. An investigation led by the Texas Rangers continued Wednesday afternoon.

As mentioned in the KHOU video report above, Normangee has had problems with a chief of police before. In 2014, Chief Jody Navarro pled guilty to using a department computer to aid an area meth dealer.
