Texas Residents Living Up Tax Free Weekend

This past weekend, Texans enjoyed the annual tax-free weekend that has taken place every year since 1999.

According to Nestor Montoya and our news partner KWTX, the sales tax-free weekend took place from August 11th to August 13th.

The weekend's purpose is to relieve some of the economic burdens of shopping for back to school supplies by taking the sales tax off most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks that are lower than $100.

The office of the Texas Comptroller's estimated that Texas shoppers saved over $37 million in taxes over the tax-free weekend.

Hector De La Torre of Waco was out and about buying school supplies for his kids with the savings.

"In the end, we're going to spend $150 or so," De La Torre told KWTX. "It's going to be about $12 to $14 that we are going to be saving so I think it's definitely worth it.
