President Trump Says the Military Will be Paid During the Government Shutdown

On Saturday, the President directed the Department of War to ensure that U.S. troops are paid on Wednesday. In a post on social media, the President said he was making the order because members of the military would miss the paychecks they are rightfully owed on October 15th. According to Politico, around $8 billion will be shifted from military research, development, and evaluation.

Lawmakers Fundraise During the Government Shutdown

The government shutdown is not interfering with fundraising plans for members of Congress. According to the Washington Examiner, The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee still intends to hold its Napa Retreat today and tomorrow in California. Some Senate Republicans had a weekend fundraiser at the five-star Sea Island Resort in Georgia.

Democrats Refuse to Open the Government

On Thursday, Senate Democrats blocked the Republicans’ continuing resolution (CR) for the seventh time on Thursday. At issue is insurance. In an interview with Fox Business, California Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna said the government is shut down for various reasons, among them, Democrat efforts to make it easier for illegal immigrants to obtain taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits.

Not All Democrats Agree with Shutting Down the Government

A former DHS Secretary is breaking ranks with Democrats, saying the government needs to be re-opened. Speaking on the Friday edition of CNN’s “The Source,” Jeh Johnson said he agreed with Democrat Sen. John Fetterman and Democrat Sen. Angus King on re-opening the government.
