2020's been a year of one nasty trick after another, so it's about time the kids get some treats. Local churches and organizations are working to make sure that happens.

VFW Post 1820 in Temple will host a trunk-or-treat event from 6PM to 8PM on Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24, and you're invited to participate for free. That means either coming by the family to enjoy some treats, or decorating your vehicle's trunk and handing out candy. Trick-or-treaters will vote for their favorite trunks, so bring your spookiest A-game and you could win a prize.

They're spreading the event out over two nights to try to avoid overcrowding, and while parking your car to participate as a candy giver is free, donations to the VFW would be welcome. Those funds go to help local veterans and their families.

VFW Post 1820 is located at 3302 Airport Road in Temple. If you have any questions or want to be part of the fun, give them a call at (254) 778-5450 or reach out to them on Facebook.

Foundation United Methodist Church at 10751 W Adams Avenue in Temple is hosting a Fall Carn-ival on Saturday, October 24 from 1PM to 4PM. It'll be a drive-through event with treats, plus fun games and activities for families like car BINGO and toss games you can play from your vehicle. The event is free, and you can register at Eventbrite.

Out in my hometown of Troy, the Troy United Methodist Church at 2500 FM 935 will host a Harvest Fun Night from 6PM to 7PM Sunday, October 25. The theme is "Let Your Light Shine", so they ask that guests not dress too spooky or gory. There'll be treats and plenty of fun, along with some social distancing guidelines to ensure everyone has a great and safe time.

On Halloween night, Saturday, October 31, Canyon Creek Baptist Church at 4306 South 31st Street in Temple will have a drive-thru trunk-or-treat from 6PM to 8:30 PM.

In Killeen, First United Methodist Church at 3501 E Elms Road invites you to join them for trunk-or-treat Saturday, October 31 from 4PM to 6PM. The event is open to the public, and the candy will be safely pre-bagged before you arrive. Your family can collect some treats, then drive through the parking lot to see all the decorated trunks. You can enter your trunk into the event here.

The church could use candy donations to help make the event special for kids in the Killeen community. If you'd like to help out, reach out to Brandy Boudreaux at brandy.boudreaux@fumc-killeen.org.

There will be plenty of Halloween fun and treats around Central Texas, and we'll bring you more as we hear about them. If you hear of one we should help get the word out about, feel free to us know in the comments.

However you choose to celebrate Halloween, we hope you have a fun time, but remember to keep safety top of mind. Not just when it comes to COVID-19 (which you should keep in mind when making plants), but when it comes to inspecting your child's candy before they eat it and making sure they're visible to cars driving around that night. Drivers, be sure to watch for the ghouls and boils out having a good time. The National Safety Council has some quick tips.

Happy Halloween!
