Tragic news out of McLennan County, where a beloved middle school principal and veteran passed away as a result of COVID-19.

Our partners at News 10 report that 49-year-old G.W. Carver Middle School principal Phillip Perry was hospitalized Monday after testing positive for the novel coronavirus. Perry, who served in the Marine Corps, is the first reported COVID-19 fatality in McLennan County.

Perry graduated from Waco High School in 1989. After serving as a Marine, he worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Aldine ISD, and Lamar Consolidated ISD. He was assistant principal at Waco High School for two years and served as principal at Fred Edwards Academy in Temple in 2015. He'd served as principal at G.W. Carver Middle School since 2019, and previous served as an assistant principal.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Perry's family, friends, and coworkers, as well as all the students whose lives he touched.
