It looks like Target is getting some competition. Yes! Walmart is classing up its stores and the clothing departments are amazing!

Walmart Targets Upper-Income Closets

My first job in high school was as a Walmart cashier. I advanced to Service Desk manager by the time I was in college and have shopped at the store ever since. So yes, I am a Walmart expert. My main beef with Walmart over the years has been their shoddy clothes selection. I am thrilled to tell you that is no longer the case.

Do My Eyes Deceive Me? Is That Real Cotton?

I don't ask for much when it comes to clothes. Give me real cotton, solid colors, and absolutely no writing or brand names on the clothes. Walmart never met the criteria. Until now. I knew something was up months ago when I started seeing stuff in the store that I would actually buy. I asked several Walmart associates what was up (associates are employees. That is the insider Walmart lingo), but none of them knew.

My Local Walmart is No Longer Gross

I have a long commute to work with two Walmart stores standing between me and the house. They have always been nice, and I noticed the change in clothing at these stores before I saw it at the Walmart store where I actually live. I went to my local store today to pick up medicine, and I could not believe it. It could have been a Target. It was actually classy and yes, the amazing new clothing filled the racks.

When In Doubt, Google That Thing

I asked the cashier, again today, what was going on with the clothes. I figured they would have been told about the changes in one of those annoying pep rally Walmart staff meetings that I had to attend back in the day. She was clueless, so enough was enough. I googled the Walmart clothing line changes.

Walmart Is Going for the High-End Shopper

Retail dynamics are shifting dramatically in 2026, and the nation's largest retailer is betting consumers are increasingly willing to spend their money where they see what they like (even if it is Walmart). It appears to be working.

High End Shoppers Are Choosing Walmart

According to Yahoo Finance, six-figure income households represent the retail giant's fastest-expanding customer demographic, and clothing is taking on a significantly larger role in driving overall corporate growth. During a Q4 fiscal 2026 earnings conference call, corporate leadership highlighted apparel as a standout sector for the company. Walmart's goal is to establish the chain as the nation's premier apparel destination for every segment of the American public.

The Strategy Behind the Style Overhaul

The change in direction in the clothing department followed the hiring of former Saks Fifth Avenue and Ralph Lauren executives who joined the Walmart team in 2017. They found that people were shopping at Walmart, but they were not buying clothes. To capture a larger share of consumer closets, Walmart undertook a comprehensive brand redesign, launching private-label lines such as Scenario, a modern, bohemian-inspired collection featuring hundreds of pieces priced predominantly under $25.

Luxury Leadership Meets Everyday Value

The company tapped a high-profile, native born Texan fashion talent to helm its core private lines. Renowned designer Brandon Maxwell, known for styling global figures and managing his own luxury label, serves as creative director for the house brands Free Assembly and Scoop. Walmart is also offering Jessica Simpson's fashion line. I guess I'll be saying au revoir to Target!
