Tragic: Months After Baby Dies in Tub, Mother Charged in Round Rock, Texas
Months after her baby drowned in an apartment bathtub while she was on her phone, a 21-year-old mother from Round Rock, Texas has been arrested.
Victoria Tristan has been charged with injury to a child, a first-degree felony, after leaving her 1-year-old daughter unattended in the bathtub back in January, according to an arrest affidavit shared by KCEN.

When questioned, Tristan told officers she put the 1-year-old in the tub and washed her off, leaving the water running. Minutes later, she left the baby alone and sat down on a bed, texting on her phone. She leaned over to rest, then fell asleep for what she says was a few minutes. After waking up, Tristan told police she went into the bathroom and the tub was overflowing. She then took the baby out of the tub and attempted CPR, but the child didn't respond.
Phone records show Tristan texting for five minutes before searching YouTube, then calling 911. The Travis County Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was drowning, ruling it an accident.

Statistics from the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services show there were at least 77 fatal drownings of children 17 and younger throughout the state in 2021. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report an average of around 11 fatal unintentional drownings in the United States every day.
Tristan was charged with knowingly causing serious bodily injury to a child by omission. Injury to a child by omission is a felony in Texas; if found guilty, Tristan could face life in prison, according to the Texas Penal Code. As of Thursday night, Tristan was in custody at the Williamson County jail in Georgetown and her bond was set at $300,000.
