Burger King Offers 1¢ Whoppers in Pettiest Promotion Ever

The folks at Burger King want you to go to McDonald's, and they're offering you an incentive.

It's part of their 'Whopper Detour' promotion, which is equal parts hilarious, brilliant, and downright petty.

Here's how it works. You get the Burger King app, then get within 600 feet of a McDonald's. The app will then unlock a coupon for a 1¢ Whopper and redirect you to the nearest Burger King.

I downloaded the app out of curiosity, and there was the promotion at the top of the screen. I haven't actually tried to get the Whopper yet, but if I try later tonight or tomorrow, I'll update this article with an image of what happened.

In the video above, actors for Burger King troll McDonald's employees at McDonald's drive-thru windows. Petty, petty, petty! But hey, it got my attention.

And, honestly, it made me laugh. This is actually a damned clever use of their app.

The only thing throwing me off is that I would have expected this from Wendy's. After all, Wendy is notorious for being smug on Twitter, so I could see her pulling a prank like this. I guess the King anticipated such a move and swooped in first.

Hopefully McDonald's (and, I hope, Wendy's) will think of clever ways to fire back and keep this flame(broiled) war going.
