Caution! Texas Traffic Deaths in Construction Zones Continue to Rise

There were 250 deaths in Texas road work zones last year - a whopping 33 percent increase from 2020.

As Texas continues to grow, road construction across the state will continue to be an issue we all will have to deal with. It's inevitable and unavoidable. What can be avoided however is the road deaths that happen in construction zones.

Texas Work Zone

According to The Texas Department of Transportation's "Project Tracker," there are more than 11,000 road projects underway in the state of Texas.

With that many work zones happening, you're bound to run across one or two during your travels.

Texas Work Zone Deaths

More than 26,000 accidents happened in work zones across the state of Texas, killing 250 people. Those numbers are very high and Billy Kirksey, TxDOT work zone crew chief for the Waco district, tells KWTX, that one solution to the problem is for drivers to slow down and avoid distracted driving,

“Slow down and drive to the conditions. Pay special attention to your driving. Stay alert, stay off your phone, don’t tailgate. Be on the lookout for us road crew out there. Follow their instructions. Remember, we want to get home safely, too.”

Slowing down and paying extra attention in a work zone should be a given, but we've all seen the driver, or divers, that continue to drive through a work zone at excessive speeds.

Work Zone Awareness Week

Work Zone Awareness Week starts on Monday, April 11 and TxDOT is reminding drivers to slow down in and follow proper safety protocols when driving through a work zone.

2021 was the second most deadliest year on Texas roads, with almost 4,500 deaths reported. Let's put an end to that.
