San Antonio, Texas neighborhood of Sunny Slope on the East Side had a home catch fire early this morning that is serving as a reminder to all of us to always be careful when dealing with anything with an open flame especially when the weather conditions are conducive for runaway blazes.

According to this KENS 5 article, the San Antonio Fire Department responded to a house fire on the 200 block of Villareal Street near Clark Avenue, which would put is just a couple of blocks away from Highlands High School within the San Antonio Independent School District.

A short while after 2 AM this morning, a normally quiet Texas neighborhood became quite the epicenter for first responders. The fire was primarily in the attic, but investigators were able to determine that a carelessly flung cigarette on the back deck was able to grow into a fire that climbed the back wall.

This time of year is especially bad for runaway grass and wildfires because of how much the Texas wind loves to blow, and the ground has been sitting dry and dormant since the end of last year's growing season. Even after a passing rain, the ground often is still much too dry, and is at risk of igniting.
