Today in Country Music History: July 14th
From Elvis to Luke Combs, July 14th is one of those glorious days with country music milestones by legends in the heart of American music.
Elvis Hits Country #1
On July 14, 1956, Elvis Presley had his first #1 country hit with "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You." The song held the top spot for two weeks. Raw energy and heartfelt vocals opened the floodgates on a new trajectory for country artists who were willing to drive their mixing truck right through them.
Billboard Expands Country List
And on this day in 1973, Billboard expanded the Hot Country Singles chart from 75 to 100. Not the most thrilling info, you might say. But for fans and aspiring artists that meant more voices got heard. More music got played. More twang came through the radio. And it charted the message that country music was not a marginal genre - it was exploding!
Happy Birthday, Jamey Johnson
July 14, 1975, welcomed Jamey Johnson into the world. A lion of "weird" music grit and soul country style with songs like "In Color" and "High Cost of Living." A very modern outlaw, Johnson is more comfortable with a guitar than a gimmick. If you’ve ever experienced whiskey-soaked heartache, there’s almost no doubt Jamey Johnson has already captured it in song.
They Done Merle Wrong
In 1981, prior to a show in Houston, Merle Haggard had $175,000 worth of sound equipment and instruments stolen. Most of the equipment was recovered the next day when the thief attempted to sell it at a local pawn shop.
Always a Hit Maker
On this day in 1980, Garth Brooks was sitting at #1 on the US Country charts with, "The Dance". The song, written by Brooks' friend, Tony Arata, was an important song on his self-titled debut album Garth Brooks, and is considered by many to be Brooks' signature song.
A Star is Born
Julie and Gary Dale Wetzel welcomed their son, Singer and songwriter Koe Wetzel, into the world in Pittsburg, Texas on July 14th, 1992. In 2025, Koe recorded 'High Road' which gave him a #1 County Airplay hit. The song was taken from his sixth studio album 9 Lives.
July 14th has been the day that hits charted, charts were changed, and stars were born. It's a day that Country Music has experienced some of its greatest moments in history.
