Credit Card Skimmers Found On Pumps In Waco

If your last trip there was recent, you might want to check your accounts to make sure your card data wasn't stolen!

According to KWTX, five credit card skimmers have been discovered on pumps at Sunoco. The skimmers were removed after being found on Wednesday, but authorities advise those who've been to the location to check their accounts.

The Sunoco owners are encouraging customers to pay inside of the store instead of at the pump.

CenTex has been hit hard with scammers and skimmers in the past, so please pay attention and be aware.

What can you do to protect yourself? Well, aside from paying inside instead of the pump, you can also look for signs of a skimmer on pumps.

Check for tampering around devices into which you're expected to insert or swipe your card. Many gas pumps feature a sticker or piece of bright tape at a seam. If that piece of tape looks like it's been peeled back, broken, or otherwise messed with, don't use that pump.

If the card reader feels loose in the machine or something looks off on the keyboard (letters missing or off-center), again, don't use that pump.

If you can, try to use a pump nearest the gas station's main building. Thieves are more likely to target the pumps that are harder for employees to see them tampering with.

Finally, if you pay at the pump, consider running your transition as credit rather than debit if your bank allows this. That way you avoid having to enter your PIN, and those credit charges can be much easier to dispute if you notice something off on your bank statement. Make sure you get a receipt and hold on to it.
