Good News: Belton Shooting Suspect Caught in Oklahoma
Police in Belton, Texas believe they're one step closer to finding justice for a man who was gunned down on Shady Lane back in July of 2021.
Meet Deon James Shamburger
Police have been searching for suspect Deon Shamburger for months, and now he's in custody thanks to U.S. Marshals.
Paul Romer with the City of Belton announced on Tuesday, November 30 that Shamburger, 34, was captured in Oklahoma City. He was being held in the Oklahoma County Detention Center Tuesday afternoon awaiting extradition back to Texas.
What Is Deon Shamburger Accused Of?
According to police, Shamburger is suspected of fatally shooting 39-year-old Jamel Jones of Belton in the 1100 block of Shady Lane back on Friday, July 30.
Investigators say the two men got into a personal dispute shortly before 3:11 PM, during which Shamburger shot Jones in the torso. He reportedly fled the scene in a vehicle, then on foot.
Unfortunately, Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police Have Been Looking for Shamburger Since August
Back on August 4, Belton police announced that a murder warrant had been issued for Shamburger. At the time, he was considered armed and dangerous, and police were advising citizens not to try to apprehend him themselves.
Now Shamburger is off the streets and in police custody. He'll be sent back to Bell County to await trial for his alleged crime.
