A man claiming to have a bomb in his car led police on a chase from Bell County to Hill County Sunday morning.

Around 7 a.m., 20-year-old Preston Michael Pruitt told dispatchers in Bell County that he had a bomb under the driver's seat in his vehicle that would detonate if he was stopped. When police caught up with Pruitt's 2010 Dodge Charger, he led them on a high-speed chase along I-35.

The pursuit continued into Hill County, where troopers deployed spike strips in an attempt to stop Pruitt at FM 934 and I-35. Pruitt came to a stop around 8:45 a.m. in the 500 block of East Martin in Itsaca, just south of Hillsboro.

DPS officials say Pruitt then exited the vehicle and warned police that a bomb was about to detonate. He was arrested and residence in the area were evacuated. The McLennan County Bomb Squad was called to the scene and found no evidence of any explosive devices. The scene was cleared and residences were allowed to return to their homes around 1:30 p.m.

Pruitt was taken to the Hill County Jail and charged with evading with a motor vehicle and making a terroristic threat.
