H-E-B’s Annual Earth Day Free Bag Tradition Returns to Central Texas
Today is Earth Day in Central Texas and HEB is celebrating with a massive giveaway!
H-E-B Celebrates Earth Day with Massive Bag Giveaway
If you are heading to the grocery store today, you might want to arrive early. To mark Earth Day 2026, H-E-B has announced it will distribute 276,000 free reusable bags across its family of stores in Texas. Starting at 8 a.m. on April 22, customers at any H-E-B, Central Market, Joe V's Smart Shop, or Mi Tienda can claim a complimentary commemorative bag while supplies last.
A Legacy of Conservation
This giveaway is far from a one-time event. Since H-E-B launched the initiative in 2008, the company has put more than 3.4 million reusable bags into the hands of Texans. The project falls under the umbrella of the "Our Texas, Our Future" initiative, a broader environmental commitment that focuses on preserving the state’s natural beauty through litter cleanup and significant waste reduction projects.
School Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge
Beyond the bags, H-E-B recently celebrated a milestone in its Annual School Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge. This year, 816 Texas schools participated, collecting a record-breaking 8.4 million plastic bags for recycling, proving that local students are just as committed to the cause as the state’s largest grocer.
The History of Earth Day
While H-E-B’s tradition is nearly two decades old, Earth Day itself has been a global phenomenon for over half a century. The very first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970. It was envisioned by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who was inspired by the student anti-war movement and a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. The inaugural event mobilized 20 million Americans,10% of the U.S. population at the time. Today, Earth Day is recognized by more than a billion people in 192 countries.
