Heath Officials made the tragic announcement Tuesday that a new-born from the Houston area has become the first Zika-related death in Texas. The baby's mother traveled to Latin America during her pregnancy, and that's where authorities think she contracted the virus. She returned to Texas unaware that she had become a carrier of the virus, or that her baby had become infected.

The baby girl was born with microcephaly which is a condition in which the child is born with an abnormally small head. Most of the time this means that development of the brain is also incomplete. The baby was born at a Harris Country hospital near the city of Houston.

So far, 15 babies have been born in the U.S. with Zika-related birth defects according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Over 7000 Americans have been diagnosed so far as being infected with the Zika virus.
