Killeen, Texas - Here's How to Vote on New Name for Fort Hood

Fort Hood is one of 10 military bases that will get a new name as the country moves away from bases named after Confederate soldiers.

Fort Hood is one of the largest military installation in the world. Founded in 1942 and named after Confederate General John Bell Hood, the base is the headquarters of III Corps and First Army Division West and is home to the 1st Cavalry Division and 3rd Cavalry Regiment.

Renaming Fort Hood

Renaming Fort Hood has been a controversial conversation over the last couple of years, with many people saying they should just leave it as is while others want a new name that doesn't reflect America's racist history. Fort Hood is one of 10 bases that will get a new name by 2024.

Possible New Names for Fort Hood

You have a say in what the new name is, and KCEN reports that the Heart of Texas Defense Alliance would like to hear from you as they have narrowed the possible new names down to 11.

The Heart of Texas Defense Alliance is gathering these results to present to the government.

The City of Killeen shared these choices on Thursday, April 14:

- MSG Roy P. Benavidez
- Gen. Richard E. Cavazos
- LTC Harold Cohen
- SFC Eduardo C. Gomez
- 1LT Audie Murphy
- SSG Ruben Rivers
- SFC Paul R. Smith
- Gen. Donn A. Starry
- BG Charles Young

There are even a couple of options that are not named after soldiers:

- Fort Central Texas
- Fort Courage
