Matthew McConaughey Now Officially a UT Professor

Starting this fall, Matthew McConaughey will serve as a film professor of practice at the Moody College of Communication. He's been a visiting instructor since 2015.

His work as a mentor has paid off as far as the University of Texas staff and students are concerned. McConaughey has been named a professor of practice at the Moody College of Communication starting this fall. He will join the staff at the Department of Radio-Television-Film.

McConaughey began co-teaching a course titled "Script to Screen film production" in 2015. He told the University of Texas Austin, "the class I wish I would have had when I was in film school. Working in the classroom with these students gives me a chance to prepare them. Making movies, turning words on paper into a film, is both a science and art – no matter the time or generation. The elements of truth and genuine joy for the process are timeless. That will always be our classroom focus.”

UT Austin is the school McConaughey earned his film degree from back in 1993. He has since won several awards for his work in over 50 movies including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and has picked up experience as a producer for his work on HBO's "True Detective".

While many of McConaughey's characters in various films have been at odds with teachers, real life has proven much different. Moody College Dean Jay Bernhardt said, “We are proud to welcome Professor McConaughey to officially join our world-class faculty. Matthew cares deeply for our school and our students, and we are thrilled that he shares his time and talent to help prepare the next generation of media leaders and innovators.”
