Can QR Codes In Texas Steal Your Personal Information?
Some in the state of Texas are worried about QR Codes being able to steal our sensitive info. But can it do so? Here's what you need to know.
Where Do The Worries Originally Come From?
Per KCEN, concerns began following the growth of a certain scam identified as "brushing." You can learn more about the fraud here, but the premise is simple: items are sent by an unknown person to an individual's address. Following the item's delivery, a false review of the product is written by the unknown person, using the person's name on the address.
KCEN reports that people are posting on social media their tips on how to deal with the issue. Some individuals are suggesting that you simply use your phone and scan the QR code. This is alleged to reveal who sent the package to you.
However, Senior Director of Media Relations for the Better Business Bureau, Jason Meza, stated a Texan should wait before even doing so. But the other major worry is that personal information could be stolen via the scan. Is that possible?
Can Scammers Steal Your Personal Information Via QR Codes In Texas?
Thankfully KCEN has the answer for us. As revealed by Jason Meza, your personal info won't be taken. But, it's still not a great idea to scan it:
"Don't scan the code, simply don't perform the action right away...You're following instructions that you don't know who the code came from and, and in reality, it's probably from a scammer."
