Supreme Court to Hear First 2nd Amendment Case in Almost a Decade
The Supreme Court will hear arguments Monday in the case of a gun rights advocates who challenged gun restriction in New York that have since been repealed.
FOX News reports that the city ordinance prohibited licensed gun owners from transporting their firearm outside of city limits and placed limitations on where and how guns could be transported inside the city.
For example, CBS News reports that under the ordinance, licensed gun owners could only transport unloaded and locked handguns to seven shooting ranges in New York City.
The ordinance no longer exists, but 2nd Amendment advocates hope the current conservative-leaning Supreme Court will open the door to challenging similar ordinances in other parts of the country.
In 2008, the SCOTUS ruled on the case of District of Columbia v. Heller, and held that strict gun rules in Washington D.C. violated the 2nd Amendment. The ruling re-enforced the idea that 2A protects an individual's right to posses a firearm for lawful purposes such as self-defense and sport, but that certain regulations should apply.
