Texas A&M Officially Discontinues Women’s and Gender Studies
Texas A&M now has two fewer degree programs.
Women’s and Gender Studies Get the Boot at Texas A&M
The change announced Friday follows an incident last fall in which a student pushed back on an instructor who was including gender identity content in a course that was not related to gender identity issues. Following the release of a video of the exchange between the student and the teacher that went viral, A&M launched a campuswide review of coursework. According to the Texas Tribune, Interim President Tommy Williams based the decision lack of interest in the course and the cost of making the course available.
Degrees Live or Die by Enrollment Numbers
The availability of a degree program or class is based on the number of students signing up for the coursework. If students do not show interest, the degree/course is not offered. According to the Texas Tribune, Texas A&M offered a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree, an undergraduate minor and a graduate certificate in women’s and gender studies. At the time of the coursework review, the program had 25 students majoring in the degree program and 31 minoring in the program. The decision to discontinue the program will not affect the students already enrolled. They will be allowed to finish over the next six semesters, but no additional students will be accepted.
Additional Courses Cancelled
University officials told the Texas Tribune that six courses were cancelled after looking over 5,400 course syllabi for the Spring 2026 semester. School officials say the cancelled courses were in the Bush School of Government and Public Service, the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Education and Human Development.
