Uncover Central Texas’ Greatest Treasures: Out of The Ordinary Adventures
If you live in Central Texas or you are planning a trip through the area, I would like to tell you about a few lesser-known places to check out while you are here. There is something here for everybody. If you love spending time with Mother Earth, of if you enjoy learning about all of the things in the past the helped shaped the current society that we live in then there is plenty here for you.
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
Located near Fredericksburg, Enchanted Rock Sate Natural Area, is a massive pink granite dome that is over 400 feet above anything else in it's vicinity giving amazing views of the Hill Country. On a difficulty scale of 1-10, the hike to the top ranks about a seven. The Tonkawa people believed that the rock was enchanted because it made some weird sounds at night.
Discover the Painted Churches of Texas
There are some areas in Texas that can make it seem as if you have somehow magically transported to a different. Land. Throughout central Texas there are many churches that have beautiful interiors that are painted brightly and adorned with intricate designs and vivid murals. These churches look like they belong in Germany or some other Eastern European country. Seek out St. Mary's in High Hill or St. John the Baptist in Ammannsville, Texas.
Float the San Marcos River
In my opinion there is nothing better in the summer than getting the innertubes or kayaks, some beer, and your best friends to float the river. The San Marcos River is my choice for the best summer float in central Texas. It is spring-fed and crystal clear, and it stays 72 degrees year-round.
Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum
The Texas Rangers are probably just as well-known in pop culture as The FBI, Scotland Yard and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The Rangers have been around since 1935, and they are the largest state law enforcement agency. The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame is located in Waco, and it is a must see for history buffs. You can see everything from old weapons and badges to exhibits about some of their most famous investigations.
Central Texas has a lot to offer. You could find yourself hiking a rugged rock formation, floating down a scenic river, or stepping back in time at a historic site. Don't be afraid to find something beyond the typical tourist trap. Search out something a little less know.
