Vacant Middle School in Killeen Catches Fire
A Killeen ISD school building that hasn't been in use since 2009 caught fire in the early hours on Friday.
According to a report from the Killeen Daily Herald, the long abandoned Fairway Middle School campus in Killeen on Whitlow Drive caught fire.
Our partners at KWTX report that a KISD police officer alerted officials about the fire at the structure at 701 Whitlow Drive at approximately 3:40 AM.
KXXV reports that The Killeen Fire Department immediately responded and authorities believe that the fire initially began in the gymnasium. About 8 fire engines reported to the scene, and while the fire has been contained, by 8 AM firefighters were still working to completely extinguish the flames.
The vacant school building serves as a temporary shelter for hurricane evacuees and occasionally as a venue for free dental care for veterans. Killeen ISD has the school building listed for sale, but the recent fire damage may make it more difficult to get rid of.
