
Community Remembers Consuelo Bernabe As Search For Answers Continues
Waco Police report that preliminary autopsy reports indicate the cause of death of Consuelo Bernabe, the woman whose body was discovered inside a minivan that was pulled from the Brazos River, was drowning. Authorities added there were no signs of foul play at this time, however, the investigation is still open. At this time, the final autopsy results are still pending.
Find the Vehicle
Bernabe's body was discovered Aug. 18 after first responders pulled a maroon Dodge Caravan from the river near Jefferson Avenue and University Parks Drive. Around 10 a.m. Waco Police, firefighters, and Texas Game Wardens assisted in the effort. Investigators are still trying to determine how long the van had been under water.
Missing, Then Found
The 39-year-old mother was last seen on Friday, Aug. 15, 2025. The Rosebud Police Department had filed a missing persons report on Bernabe prior to her being discovered in Waco. Police would label her death as "questionable" at the time of discovery, as they began an investigation.
Family Honors Her
Her daughter, Hermelinda Romero spoke fondly of her mother's impact on those around her.
"My mom always had a smile on her face no matter what. Everybody loves her, even her enemies," Romero said. "She would take care of other kids and made sure everybody ate. She just had the purest soul ever. I love you ma."

A Go Fund Me account has been set up to assist Bernabe's family in coping with her unexpected death.
