A tense standoff in Killeen involving a child came to a peaceful end Saturday morning.

The incident occurred in 4200 block Alan Kent Dr. after police responded to a 911 call from a woman reporting a domestic dispute around 3:45 a.m.. According to the woman, she was assaulted by her fiance who then refused to hand over their 3-year-old child. She told police there were weapons in the home and that the man had made several threats toward her and the child.

The woman was transported to Metroplex Hospital with non-life threatening injuries while officers contacted the man by phone. The man – 29-year-old Daniel Alejandro Velarde - insisted that he was not at the home, but police were able to determine that he was. When the Velarde refused to exit the home, Killeen PD’s Tactical Response Unit was deployed. Velarde surrendered after Unit officers broke a window in order to pass a communication device to him. The child was unharmed, and the Velarde was arrested at 7:30 a.m.

Velarde now faces three charges of assault on a family member or household member by impeding their normal breathing. He is currently being held in the Bell County Jail.
