$202 Million Added in SNAP Food Benefits for This Month
It's been a tough year for just about everybody. Texas has seen a huge rise in those using the SNAP program. With COVID-19 cases in Texas on the rise, lots of folks are in need.
KWTX reports that Texas Governor, Greg Abbott, announced on Thursday that Texas will provide $202 million in emergency SNAP food benefits for the month of November in an effort to help those in need. “We will continue to ensure Texans can provide nutritious food for their families throughout the COVID-19 response,” Abbott said.
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission will extend maximum allowable SNAP benefits to more that 1 million household in Texas that use the SNAP benefits to help provide for their families. The additional amount will appear on the Lone Star Cards issued to those that have qualified for SNAP benefits.
No doubt coronavirus has stuck around much longer than expected and the number of cases continues to rise. Jobs have been affected, schools are seeing a rise in cases and it's taking it's toll on those still looking to get back to work. With the holidays rapidly approaching, lot's of people are hoping for some additional help.
HHS Access and Eligibility Services Deputy Executive Commissioner Wayne Salter says, “As we head into November and the holiday season, we want to ensure that Texans can get nutritious food for their families who may be spending more time at home. These continued benefits will ensure eligible Texans receive the help they need during these uncertain times.”
