A Texas City Once Moved Halloween For A High School Football Game
Texas is known for it's love of, and obsession with, football.
Texas High school football dates back to the 1890's. It's practically a religion throughout the state and some crazy things have been done in the name of it.
Some cities supposedly changed the color of their stop signs so they wouldn't be in an opposing teams colors.
Some smaller towns become completely vacant if their team plays an away game.
A couple of Texas cities have gone as far as moving Halloween because it fell on a Friday night. Just in case you don't know, high school football games are almost always on a Friday night. Hence the phrase/book/movie title. "Friday Night Lights".
Anyway, back to Halloween ... In 2014, Halloween fell on a Friday night and the residents of Decataur, Texas were not going to be denied their game. They voted to have Halloween moved to October 30th that year. (They won, 29-25)
They're not the only ones ... Van, Texas residents moved their Halloween to November 1st. Their game was out of town and they knew NOBODY would be in town Friday night to go trick or treating.
Football, as I mentioned, is sacred in Texas.
People with talented kids will literally pack up the whole family, quit their jobs, leave their friends, etc to move to Texas just so the kid(s) can play here. It happens and, sometimes, it doesn't work out.
Texas' history of building powerhouse teams, sending players on to college with "full rides" and eventually leading them to the NFL is well known.
Some high schools in Texas rival colleges, (even some pros), with their programs and facilities.
It's crazy. It's ridiculous even but that's how it is.
And neither I ... nor pretty much anyone else in Texas ... would have it any other way.
