MacKenzie Scott
MacKenzie Scott is a novelist, philanthropist, and the ex-wife of Jeff Bezos, the former CEO of Amazon. According to Forbes, her net worth is over $42 billion. Scott and Bezos divorced in 2019, and she received 25% of his stake in Amazon. Following the divorce, she announced that she signed the Giving Pledge which, according to their website is "a promise by the world's wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to charitable causes."
Scott has done just that with over $8.8 billion in donations to charitable groups.
The Boys and Girls Club of America
The Boys and Girls Clubs of America was fortunate to receive a $281 million donation from Scott. According to Brittany Fholer of the Copperas Cove Leader-Press, $5.2 million of that donation will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Central Texas. It's the largest donation by a single individual in the 160-year history of organization.
The Boys and Girls Club of Central Texas
The Boys and Girls Club of America provides a safe place for kids to go after school, with programs available for kids and teens in need along with a wide range of other services. The $5.2 million will be divided between clubs throughout Central Texas, including Copperas Cove, Killeen/Harker Heights/Nolanville, Lampasas, Gatesville, Georgetown, Taylor and Marlin.
Tiana Quick, CEO of The Boys and Girls Club Central Texas said in a press release,
“BGCTX feels incredibly fortunate to have received this generous donation. Fundraising is a priority for us to ensure that we don’t have to pass expenses on to our families. In most communities, charging as little as $20 for membership fees per year or providing scholarships to families who need it.”
