Killeen police are investigating several overnight car burglaries near Interstate 14/Highway 190 that resulted in dangerous items being stolen.

Ofelia Miramontez with KPD Public Affairs reported Tuesday that police were investigating approximately 60 reports of car break-ins in the parking lot of hotels between Jasper Road and WS Young Drive.

From what police can tell, the suspect or suspects went along breaking out windows to rummage around inside vehicles for loot. Unfortunately, they succeeded in stealing at least 8 handguns, along with ammunition.

Police are reminding everyone to remove and secure belongings instead of leaving them in your car, especially weapons.

That should really go without saying, but how many times have you walked by a car in a crowded parking lot and seen bags, chargers, or even things like laptop cases and phones just lying in plain sight?

Even if you hide items away under seats or in your trunk, it may not stop people like whoever was responsible for Monday night's burglaries. It looks like they were hitting random cars just to see what they could find.

Basically, if you value it, don't leave it overnight in your car.
