Humane Society of Central Texas Almost at Capacity, Needs Our Help

The Humane Society of Central Texas is close to capacity and needs your help finding fur-ever homes for animals in need.

According to a report from our news partners at KWTX, the Humane Society of Central Texas is almost at capacity after the number of intakes increased after Winter Storm Uri.

With only 210 kennels available, space is limited and the shelter is close to hitting capacity. If adoptions don't pick up as more animals are brought in, the shelter will be forced to make some tough decisions.

Fostering animals is a great way to help the shelter if you're not ready to commit to adoption just yet. Currently there are 45 pets being fostered, and without the help of those foster families, the facility would have already hit capacity.

Paula Rivadeneira, executive director of the humane society, told KWTX that fostering pets helps greatly.

"Dogs don’t behave like they normally do in a home when they’re here at the shelter,” Rivadeneira said. “We know they have fear, anxiety, frustration, and you know we do our best to take care of them, they get to go to playgroup, but it’s just not the same as being in a home, so our foster homes are really important to us."

The shelter will be holding several adoption events this weekend, and are planning plenty of others in the community.

March 26, the shelter will be at Grey May Honda in Waco from 3-5 PM. On March 27, the shelter will be at Texell in Hewitt from 10 AM-1 PM. Immediately following will be an adoption event at Eddy Feed and Seed from 1-4 PM.
