Texas Heroes Who Shaped the World in Amazing Ways!
The Lonestar State has had some great people serve in the United States Military. There have been political leaders that made it all the way to the President of the United States of America, recipients of the Medal of Honor, authors, actors, and the subject of multiple films. Here are five notable veterans from the great state of Texas.
Audie Murphy
Major Audie Murphy was born in Kingston, Texas in 1925, and he was well known for a lot of reason. Major Murphy was one of the most decorated American combat soldiers of World War II. He was also a very successful actor and songwriter.
Major Murphy's life was tragically cut short in 1971 at the age of 45 when he was killed in a plane crash 14 nautical miles northwest of Roanoke, VA.
Chris Kyle
Odessa, Texas was the birthplace of the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. Chris Kyle was a Navy Seal who over the course of four tours in Iraq had 160 confirmed kills. After returning home Chris wrote "American Sniper" which spent 37 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List. He was portrayed by Bradley Cooper in the movie "American Sniper" that was based off of his book.
Lyndon B. Johnson
Lyndon B. Johnson served in the US Navy from 1940 - 1964. He was the 36th President of the United States as well as a Navy officer during World War II. He was born in Stonewall, Texas, and he was the Vice President under President John F Kennedy. LBJ was sworn in as president aboard Air Force One after the assassination of JFK.
Marcus Luttrell
Petty Officer First Class Marcus Luttrell is a former Navy SEAL who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. While deployed to Afghanistan, Luttrell's Seal Team was ambushed, and he was the only member of his team to survive. His story inspired the book and movie Lone Survivor. Mark Wahlberg portrayed Luttrell in the film, and Luttrell had a cameo in the movie as well.
Roy Benavidez
From 1952 to 1976, Roy Benavidez was a soldier in the US Army. Benavidez retired as a Master Sergeant. He received five Purple Hearts, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and several other awards. His most prestigious award was the Medal of Honor. Master Sergeant Benavidez wrote three autobiographies. His autobiography "The Three Wars of Roy Benavidez" was about growing up as an orphan and a poor Mexican American, his time in the military, and trying to get recognition for what he accomplished in Vietnam.
