Find a penny pick it up, and all day you'll have good luck! Growing up, it was always exciting to look down and see a shiny copper penny on the ground (heads up of course). Those days could be a distant memory in the past if President Trump has anything to say about it.

In a recent post on President Trump's social media platform Truth Social, Donald Trump said that he was directing his Secretary of the US Treasury not to mint anymore pennies.

During Trump's campaign he made many promises about how he was going to improve the budget and cut spending in the United States of America. Trump appointed Texas billionaire, Elon Musk, to run a new program called the Department of Government Efficiency, or D.O.G.E.

Through the D.O.G.E., the new administration has gone on a shutdown rampage. They have ended USAID which was a program started during the Reagan Administration, and Friday, Elon Musk said that the United States Education Department no longer existed. 60,000 current federal employees accepted a buyout to leave their jobs rather than being terminated. The buyout would have paid them through September. However, a federal judge recently blocked the buyout before it could take place.

No matter what your thoughts on President Trump are, you cannot deny that the man is taking action. Also, if there was ever a great example of overspending by the government it would be the penny. The US Mint made 3.2 billion pennies last year. That is 32 million dollars in pennies. The problem is that is cost 3.69 cents to make and distribute a penny, so that means that all of the pennies were minted at a loss of over $85,000,000 a year.

I agree with Trump. Let's get rid of the penny.
