Today is National Missing Children's Day, and the Killeen Police Department needs our help finding a missing teen and getting him home safely.

KPD says 16-year-old Sim Q Lewis Jr. of Killeen was seen leaving his home on Saturday, May 22.

He's described as a Black male weighing 6'0" and weighing 140 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. He was last seen wearing a black beanie hat, a black and white Nike jacket, black and white shoes, ripped blue jeans, and a gray backpack.

If anyone has information concerning the whereabouts of Sim Q Lewis Jr., they are asked to contact the Killeen Police Department at (254) 501-8800.

I can only imagine how stressful it would be if my children went missing. I pray and hope the young man makes it home safely.

Every year, National Missing Children's Day on May 25th shines a spotlight on child safety. This observance also honors the professionals dedicated to protecting children throughout the country.

The majority of children who go missing return home. Whether they wandered off or there was a misunderstanding, many people find their way home. According to the Polly Klaas Foundation, 99.8 percent come home. Family members take nine percent of those abducted. Of those who are abducted, only a small fraction are stranger abductions. The fact remains that if it happens to any child, it happens to too many.

Observances honor those who have gone above and beyond to protect children, but they also provide resources to help continue to do so. Here are some tips for keeping your children safe every day

The following are important:

  • Keep custody documents
  • Keep recent photos of your children handy
  • Keep your medical and dental records up-to-date as well

Make sure your children are protected by:

  • Prioritizing online safety
  • Check the references and background checks of caregivers
  • In strollers and car seats, young children should never be left unattended
  • Avoid dressing children in clothing that has their names on it whenever possible
  • As early as possible, teach them their address and phone number

Take a look at Lewis Jr's images and description again, then keep your eyes peeled and your ears open. You could see or know something that could help him be found safely.
