Killeen, Texas police have released the name of a suspect they say was shot during an attempted carjacking earlier this month.

Killeen Attempted Carjacking Suspect Identified

You may remember that back on January 18, police reported that a man had been shot during an attempted carjacking. The good news is that no one died, and we now know the suspect's name.

On Wednesday, January 26, Killeen Police reported that the Bell County District Attorney has charged 31-year-old Jamar McNair Jones with aggravated robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, and evading arrest in a vehicle.

Records show he was booked into the Bell County Jail on Tuesday, January 25 at 8:52 PM. His bonds totaled $306,500.

Jones Was Already Suspected in a String of Robberies

Police say that on Tuesday, January 18, they tried to contact Jones at a house in Killeen because he was suspected in multiple armed robberies across the city.

The last thing probably on Jamar Jones's mind on January 18 was that he would be leading a dangerous police chase across Bell County, but that's what happened when he fled the scene in his car.

There and Back Again

According to investigators, Jones led police on a chase along eastbound Veterans Memorial Blvd. in Killeen, then hopped on I-14 and led officers through Harker Heights, and Nolanville. He got all the way to Belton before turning around and heading back toward Killeen.

Wrecked at the Exit

Police say the chase came to an end when Jones got off on the Rosewood Drive exit and wrecked his car.

Things Escalated From There

This is where things get really nasty. Police say Jones fled from his crashed car and attempted to hijack a nearby vehicle.

The driver of that vehicle was armed, and had no intention of giving up their property. They opened fire, striking Jones several times. Jones was taken to Seton Medical Center in Harker Heights before being transferred to Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

A Sad Situation

This is just a sad situation that nobody should ever be a part of. A suspect led a police chase all through Central Texas, and then to make matters worse, tried to rope someone else into the situation.

I don’t know what goes through people's heads when they try to do such stupid and careless things like this. I can, however, definitely understand the driver shooting him. We are from Texas after all, and most of us carry guns. It's just not smart to try stealing from anyone.

If I was able to have a conversation with Jones, I would simply ask this young man if it was all worth it.
