Need Good News? Gas Prices are Down Heading Into Memorial Day Weekend
It's been a brutal week across the country so I'll take this as a sliver of good news. Gas prices in Texas are down heading into the holiday weekend.
Gas Prices in Central Texas
Take the good news where you can find it. Seeing prices fall at the gas pump is better than watching them rise. It's unreal how much we are paying for gas in Texas, the land of gas and oil, but for anyone outside the state, I know the cost per gallon is even higher.
Overall, the cost of gas in Texas is cheaper than most states. The national average for a gallon of unleaded gas is $4.60. Here in Texas the average cost for gas is $4.25, and slightly cheaper in Bell County where the average cost of a gallon of unleaded gasoline is $4.21.
Compared to last year's prices, when gas in Texas was $2.73 a gallon for regular unleaded, it's just unreal how much gas has skyrocketed over the last year.
Memorial Day Travel
According to AAA, 39.2 million people are predicted to travel at least 50 miles or more from their home over the Memorial Day weekend. That's an increase of almost 10% from 2021.
Many of the folks traveling over the holiday weekend expect to be paying more at the pump than this time last year, and although we've seen record high gas prices here in Texas, those number are slightly down from where they were last week. Sure it's only 3 cents, but that's better than seeing them go up another 3 cents.
So the news is only slightly good but with current trends in the gas market, at least we're not paying California prices of more that $6 a gallon.
Be safe this holiday weekend!
