Hail Yes! There’s a New Record From the Storm in Salado, Texas

Well, the wait is over for Gina Brown of Salado, and it looks like a record has been broken. Her blue-ribbon hailstone is the largest one ever found in Central Texas.

The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety scanned the massive hailstone Brown found in her yard on Tuesday, April 12th following the severe storms that blew through the area. The maximum diameter of the ice chunk measured 5.67 inches and had a weight of over 14 ounces, according to KWTX.

Last week, KWTX reported that Brown found the hailstone and posted it on Facebook after the storm. She hid in a closet to stay safe, and after hearing what she described as the 'loudest pounding she had ever heard in her life', Brown went outside to find the giant piece of ice in her yard.

Largest Hailstone in Texas

After hours of measurements, what officials are calling the 'Salado Stone' was not big enough to break the overall state record set last year in Hondo, Texas on April 28th.

The 'Hondo Stone' had a maximum diameter of 6.41 inches and weighed 1.26 pounds (around the size of a melon), according to the National Weather Service. However, officials say the 'Salado Stone' is considered largest hailstone on record in Central Texas. Measuring hailstones helps weather researchers better understand how the ice chunks form and grow, so that homes and other structures can be better prepared for future storms.

Brown says she will keep the 3D model that was made of her hailstone in her office, and keep the original in her freezer as long as possible.
