Nightmare Way to Die, Texas Man Swarmed by Bees, Stung to Death
There are many nightmare scenarios when it comes to ways to be killed on the job but this is about as painful as it gets.
A landscaper was working a job in Austin, Texas and got swarmed by thousands of bees and stung to death.
Attacked by Bees
KXAN reports that Franco Galvan Martinez, 53, a landscape lighting technician, was suspended by a harness while working in a tree at a home in West Austin when he must have disturbed a beehive.
Joe Maldonado, pastor, family friend and spokesman for the Martinez family said the Martinez must have kicked the latter he was using away during the panic of the bee swarm and was suspended in the air as the bees attacked. A nearby neighbor heard the screams from Martinez saying he looked to be covered by thousands of bees.
Unable to Help
Two of Martinez's co-worked attempted to help but were also stung by the bees. Maldonado tells KXAN, “For over 10 minutes, all they could do was endure hearing [Galvan Martinez’s] anguish.”
Firefighters were able to use their firehoses to blast the bees away from Martinez and finally reach him. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.
Homeowner Knew of the Hive
It's also reported that the homeowner knew of the beehive but it had never been an issue before this incident.
In Case of a Bee Attack
Mike Lopez is a professional beehive remover and he tells KXAN that if you are attacked you should find shelter indoors or in a car. Lopez says bees are attracted to the carbon dioxide from a humans breath meaning your mouth and nose are usually what makes you vulnerable.
Martinez was described as a joyful man, married father of two with grandchildren.
