We hear a lot about AI and the jobs it could eliminate, but two Temple Independent School District Middle Schools are making sure when it comes to robotics, students are ahead of the game.

Boosting Engineering Science and Technology Robotics State Tournament

A competition in Dallas last weekend saw robotics teams from across Texas compete in the Boosting Engineering Science and Technology Robotics State Tournament. After excelling at local meets earlier this year, Bonham Middle School and Travis Science Academy moved on to the state tournament. The majority of the competition was high school teams.

The Competition

The competition involves much more than designing a robot. The team's robots are judged on agility while maneuvering through an obstacle course, design documentation, marketing proposal, and panel interview.

Bonham Middle School’s Robotics Team

Not only did the 21 member Bonham Middle School team make it to the state competition in its first year...it surpassed 11 other teams in the five round contest to win the 2025 Rookie Bowl and advance in the competition.

Travis Science Academy Robotics Team

The Travis Science Academy Robotics Team returned for their second year of competition. Four of the nine-person team competed last year as well.

The Competition is a Team Effort

Computer teacher Brandon Knight tells Fox 44, “ The greatest thing I saw was the teamwork they had and the problem-solving. It was amazing to see how they would trouble shoot any problem they had, they never gave up and worked through it.” Temple ISD Career and Technical Education Coordinator Brianna Hubnik tells Fox 44 students are learning skills they will use in a technology field.  “Students directly apply principles of mechanical engineering, coding, and physics. They learn the complete Engineering Design Process, from prototyping to the live working product, making abstract concepts concrete. When failure occurs, students quickly learn to troubleshoot, collaborate under pressure, and persist through setbacks.”
