The Killeen Police Department and the Texas Rangers are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon.

Killeen PD spokeswoman Ofelia Miramontez reports that officers were dispatched to what she called a psychiatric call in the 1600 block of Carrollton Avenue at approximately 5:29 PM Sunday.

When officers arrived, they encountered a man described as being in emotional distress. It appears that an altercation occurred during which an officer used what Miramontez called an energy weapon on the man, which was ineffective. The officer then fired his duty weapon, wounding the man.

Paramedics transported the man to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, where he later passed away as a result of his injuries.

The officer who fired his weapon is currently on administrative leave pending the results of an investigation, per department protocol.

The investigation is being led by the Texas Rangers with support from KPD's Criminal Investigation Division.
