The American Federation of Teachers Will Support Teacher Strike
Teachers are talking about going on strike if schools open without proper safety measures in place, and they've got support.
The American Federation of Teachers, which represents close to 2 million teachers nationwide, have told their teachers they will support any educators who strike due to schools reopening without proper safety measures in place to protect students, teachers and staff.
KWTX is reporting that Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers, said, "We will fight on all fronts for the safety of our students and their educators, but if authorities don't protect the safety and health of those we represent and those we serve, as our executive council voted last week, nothing is off the table."
Teachers across the country are upset after President Trump ordered schools to reopen as COVID-19 cases continue to surge during the pandemic. Weingarten called Trump's response "chaotic and catastrophic."
"Now they're afraid and angry," Weingarten said. "Many are quitting, retiring or writing their wills."
The union also said it will file lawsuits and labor grievances for any unsafe re-openings.
The report didn't mention how, if at all, this could affect the upcoming school year here in central Texas. We'll keep you posted.
